Chinese Dissidence in Writing - A Subtle Subversion

Much criticism was levied at the guestlist for the China Market Focus at this year's London Book Fair. China is, after all, a country known for censoring its writers and quashing dissidence. At least, that's what one thinks, right?

Comma Press' translation of Chinese short stories in Shi Cheng: Short Stories from Urban China (edited by Liu Deng, Carol Yinghua Lu and Ra Page, 2012) reveals that perhaps there is a more subtle subversion going on. The Financial Times has praised the forward-thinking Manchester indie press, who are dedicated to the short story in all its forms and, more recently, to translations into English of some examples of the form.

You can read more about this wonderful anthology at the publisher's website.
