Matte vs Gloss?

There's a rather interesting discussion on glossy vs matte covers here. The argument is that readers spot POD titles by their flat glossy covers, and so many traditionally published titles are overlooked for this same reason.

I can see where the problem arises. Most POD presses only offer glossy covers as standard, and matte is more expensive. I personally prefer matte covers, but our Dog Horn titles are a mix of glossy and matte covers, depending on budget, book length, etc.

Glossy covers have never bothered me that much, but I can see what consumers would think. Many crappy self-published novels have dreadful computer-generated art, funky fonts, bad layouts and cheap glossy covers. Stay clear of those ones.
